About Project
“based on a true story” is a digitally embroidered book page detailing the story of a 6 year old girl who was subjected to the horrific process of female genital mutilation. The story is taken and edited from female genital mutilation charity Daughters of Eve and is a reflection on the event written 22 years later. The concept was to raise awareness to the subject whilst communicating the truth behind the subject.
Female genital mutilation refers to procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice is illegal in the UK and is usually carried out on young girls between infancy and the age of 15. The procedure is carried out without anaesthetics, using knives, pieces of glass or razorblades. Girls may have to be forcibly restrained and are often stitched up using found sewing equipment.
This Project was a collaboration between myself & Seren Moon.
