My documentary explores the mass disappearance of honeybees overseas known as colony collapse disorder. This decline of bees not only threatens the world’s honey production, but also our whole ecosystem. The main benefit of bees is through their role in pollination. Pollination by honeybee accounts for about a third of our food production allowing for pollination of fruits, nuts, and vegetables. In New Zealand our imports and industries are reliant on the bee. 5.1 billion dollars of the New Zealand economy is attributed to pollination by honeybees, domestic honey sales and exports, and earnings from sales of beeswax and exported honeybees. In my film I look at why they are disappearing and if this phenomenon could happen in New Zealand. I investigate the many causes to the colony collapse particularly focusing on these new systemic pesticides called Neonicotinoids. In my film I interview people from different backgrounds (from scientists to politicians) who share different views of the toxicity of these pesticides. In doing this I aim to give a well-rounded unbiased discussion of whether these pesticides are harmful.
This is my first documentary I have made and also my major project at University.
In this project I produced, researched, edited, filmed and scripted content. I also interviewed people and did the narration. Some friends (mentioned in the credits) helped with some of the editing, filming, and sound design.
